I ran my first race in two years this past Sunday....Chicago Big 10k. I was suprised to see that I ran it almost three minutes faster than I did two years ago. I guess I'm not so out of shape after all. So, in celebration of my recent accomplishment, a blog post all about why I love racing....

Today was the perfect morning. Gorgeous. A morning that reaffirms why I love to wake up at the crack of dawn and put in a few miles before breakfast. It's so beautiful in the early morning hours of day break. So serene. An excerpt from a poem I once wrote when asked "Why do you run?"....Enjoy.

Peace, humility, strength, courage.

A few of the treasures running gives me.

In the early waking hours

Somewhere between sleep and wakefulness

I dig out my running clothes

tie on my shoes

And stumble out the door

Into the Amber colored dawn

I am quiet, serene, only my thoughts to keep me company

I worry, I weigh options, I plan my day,

And sometimes I just listen-

To the pitter pat of my feet as they hit the pavement

To to dog barking in the distance

To the cars whizzing by up ahead

And I feel Peace

PermaLinkSpring Awakening

The long and winding road has begun. In other words, today marks the first day of another running season. Time to rub the sleepies from my eyes, stop cursing the alarm blarring in my ear at a far too early hour, and hit the roads with a vengence. And of course, we all need a little help from our friends which I graciously received from my super sweet N this morning as he enouraged me on my mission to actually get out of bed. So, thanks to N, and a small dose of my pig headed ambition that I treasure so dearly, I embarked on the first of what will no doubt be a long series of sunrise spring runs. And it was glorious. Let me tell you that there is nothing like watching and listening to the world wake up as you yourself are waking up with every stride and every controlled breath. Don't believe me? Give it a try. I promise you won't regret it. Hate running? Go for a walk instead. Yeah, it sounds hokey, but nothing compares to the surge of adrenaline your body gets after a morning work out (and this is in fact a proven fact folks). You'll find your head clearer, more focused, and far more ready to face whatever inevitable annoyances occur throughout your day. But I digress. I am stepping off my soapbox now... I suppose I just want everybody to feel good and positive this time of year because it is always when things change for the better for me. After a long winter (though this year, thanks again to N, it did not feel nearly so long and cold as usual) battling depression and doldrums these first few marvelous days of sun and warmth are always an awakening in the truest sense of the word. It's like coming out of hibernation and suddenly realizing there is a whole new world to explore. Enjoy it! (However you may choose to do so).
