In between other, more important activities,
I've gotten an Ubuntu system up and running so I could kick the tires of
Notes 8.5 for Linux.
Firstly, if you're running Ubuntu, definitely
use the Debian package rather than try to be lazy and use the RPM converted
via Alien. It can work, but isn't worth the mucking around you have
to do. Also, Notes 8.5 only seems to work on Ubuntu 8.04 right now.
I tried some things to get it running under 8.10, but finally threw
in the towel and fell back on the fully supported OS release - I know,
I'm so pedestrian.
I have to say I'm impressed by how snappy Notes is on Linux. I have only been using it for a day, but it runs smoother on Linux with 512 MB RAM on a single processor machine than it does on my 2 GB RAM iMac with dual processors. I have to imagine that's due to the graphical perks Mac is giving you, Notes on Linux has a slightly more blocky look to it but all in all Notes on Linux still looks great.
Only other quibbles I can come up with right now are that the Notes install didn't give an option to automatically add a launcher, and that I've gotten the "default mail client" prompt every time I've opened Notes so far. We'll see how things go after a few more days of kicking the tires.
