They're very tiring.

Two things are keeping me from accepting all interpretations as valid, even though I love the idea of a new opportunity for each reader.

The first problem is that I took too many French classes. In French pedagogy, analyzing a text means that you take a small portion of the text and decipher, word by word, what the author could have meant in that particular section. Referring to other parts of the work is frowned upon and broader themes don't generally come into play. In this tradition, there isn't a lot of room for differing interpretations.

Second, I took a class on epistemology. I spent ten weeks on whether the statement "The cat is on the mat" were true and how one could possibly know that the cat is, indeed, on the mat. Not to mention whether both the cat and the mat exist or are figments of my imagination, assuming that I exist. It seems to me that, in a post-modernist world, one would have to prove that the text were valid in order to prove that the interpretation is valid.

Or maybe I'm just confused. This is why I'm switching to art history. Art is much less subjective than literature.

Comment From Chris

No, I mean, that without text to give it meaning, nothing has meaning. Not my computer, not my chair, and certainly not a book. THAT needs to get cleared up straight away.

However, one could extrapolate from your statement that since the reader invests the text with importance by interpreting it, all interpretations are equally important and valid. I have a real problem with that idea. I definitely don't believe that all interpretations are valid.
You're not a postmodernist, are you? It's okay. I wasn't for a long time, either. (POMO is ruining my whole life as far as I'm concerned, but I do like this one teeny point.) Anyway, the SHORT version of the pomo argument for that goes like this:

Of course all interpretations are equally valid. They would have to be equally valid so that there wasn't a "right" reading and a "wrong" reading, thereby leaving the possibility of opportunity open to every reader. It's necessary to have every avenue open so as not to become a totalitarian society (which is EVIL as far as pomo theorists are concerned). It is the ONLY way that the margins can exist and we should be living in the margins! Things are just too homogeneous in the center.

I'm going to back that up with a story about Einstein. We all agree he's a genius, right?

So, apparently, E=MC2 is not a new idea and is nowhere even close to revolutionary. Apparently, Physicists were trying to get a constant so that they could deconstruct speed, and they were all looking to Time. Well, Time has flaws once you get off the planet and Time is a man-made construction. They thought they couldn't do it. Then Einstein said, "What about Light as the constant." They thought he was crazy (an invalid interpretation, if you will). But y'know what? It turns out that, just b/c a whole bunch of people see it one way and can't look at it another doesn't mean that another interpretation isn't valid.

Honestly? I■m not a fan of academic readings, I don■t like the cannon and I don■t think that literature should be butchered the way that it is now. It■s time for some new blood to step up to the plate and read things in the way that they haven■t been read before.
